An October Watchlist for the Witches, Bitches, Sluts & Vamps

This woman is dangerous!

The moment it starts getting dark pre 7:30pm summer sunsets, I light candles in the late afternoons. There’s something to be said for embracing the darkness, rather than mourning the loss of light. I love when I can tell the light is changing, the palette of the whole city changes, it gives me permission to be cozier, and begin my autumn viewing.

There are certain TV and movies that just feel like fall, and you’re probably already aware of them—Dead Poet’s Society, Gilmore Girls, Felicity, the quaintness of academia, nostalgia for school. But the moment October hits, it’s time for sex & magic with a hint of violence. (Beyond Practical Magic, though that is a verified classic!)

Here’s my October watchlist featuring “dangerous” women, to get you in the spirit of the season.

Valerie and Her Week of Wonders still

Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, 1970, Directed by Jaromil Jeres

Playful, mischievous, coquette, Wacky & Weird, this movie is a wild ride. May we all laugh in the face of our oppressors.

American Horror Story, Coven, 2013

The best season of AHS, undisputed. Angela Bassett as Marie Laveau, the Voodoo Queen of New Orleans. Powerful & not to be fucked with, Will stick needles into sensitive spots for effect. Honorable mention/Never forget another witch’s last words in this season: BALENCIAGGGGGGAAA.

Ms .45, 1981, Directed by Abel Ferrara

Turns pain into power. Exquisite and endless revenge. From good girl to femdom. Her wardrobe and look transformation is everything!!

Content warning: the first 20 min are really rough but I feel the redemption makes it worthwhile. Check the synopsis before watching.

The Love Witch, 2016, Directed by Anna Biller

The vibes are IMMACULATE. You will want to move into this movie much like the Practical Magic house. She’s a serious lovergirl. Her own worst enemy. A witch for the modern moment.

A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, 2014, Directed by Ana Lily Amirpour

Eerie and oh so atmospheric. Says soooooo much without dialogue. The vigilante vampire we all need, and on a skateboard? It does not get better than this.
